1. Inadequate Time Spent Researching Keywords

The vast majority of the authors I’ve worked with haven’t succeeded in using the Internet to effectively market themselves simply because they don’t approach the whole process the way an Internet marketer would approach it — in other words, there’s no real plan to dominate a set of keywords related to your book or your expertise.
In order to have success online, you need to familiarize yourself with the concept of long-tail keywords; to understand how to analyze your competition; and how to know, with almost certainty, how much traffic a particular keyword gets.

2. Lack of Content
Surprisingly, even prolific writers with dozens of books under their belt — gifted writers who can write volumes on their subject — somehow think that they can skate by on the Internet with just a couple pages (or even paragraphs!) of content.
Simply not true.
Here’s the deal: Google and the other search engines LOVE content-rich sites.
This is exactly why a giant portal like Wikipedia is able to draw so much traffic from Google. Google has indexed millions of their pages.
How many of your site’s pages does Google know exist? I would guess that’s somewhere between 2 and 5.

3. Ignoring Social Marketing and Web 2.0
If you haven’t noticed, the Internet is changing. In just the past couple of years, sites like Facebook, Digg, YouTube, and EzineArticles.com — and, of course, Twitter — have dramatically shifted the way we interact online.
We’ve been through a seismic shift in the way news and information is not only delivered, but also in how it’s filtered — the “average guy” sitting in a cubicle in his office can catapult a story to the top of the news, no matter what some out-of-touch editor somewhere happens to think about it.

It’s incredible how many writers don’t take advantage of the most powerful online marketing tool there is — the ability to grow a base of support and loyal fans through tools like mailing lists, or “followers” on Twitter, or subscribers to an RSS feed, or any number of other strategies that traditional Internet marketers use everyday.
It’s pretty obvious why this is so important — people who already know your work and trust you are already going to be predisposed to buying from you.
If someone decides to purchase a book you’ve written, well then of course they’d be interested in books two, three and four as well.
But having no way to contact the people who bought your first book — your fanbase — means you have to repeat the entire process every single time with every single book you ever publish.
Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to fire off a few emails to your existing fanbase?
Or simply to create a blog post to announce another book?
This is exactly the way an author can build an empire.
5. Focusing Too Much on the Sale
What? That’s a mistake? But that’s the point, isn’t it?
Yes. And no.
So here’s what I’m arguing: If you focus just on “moving product” (i.e. on selling books now) and ignore the other stuff you should be doing (see #4 above), you’re not going to be putting enough effort into building a real presence, and a loyal following, online. But it’s that very loyal following that can be counted on to buy many thousands of books time and time again.
What would you prefer — selling a couple of books a day now, or selling thousands of books every day to throngs of adoring fans a year from now?
You shouldn’t be struggling.
There’s no reason why you can’t build an information empire the same way thousands of Internet marketers have done. Stop trying to sell a book or two here and there. Start focusing on creating killer content and getting it out to the very people who need your expertise.
Sales (like you’ve never imagined before!) will inevitably follow.
